(I'm very sorry if the following rant offends anyone out there.)

A rant on Shipping Death Fics

Now, one of the most popular topics when it comes to Fan-Fiction is shipping. I myself, being a fan of shipping can relate to this kind of Fan-Fic, the thing that baffles me however, is the reason why one would write a Shipping Death Fic, a Fan-Fic in which one member of the couple is killed off. This type of Fan-Fic takes on various scenarios:

1st example : One member of the couple is has been mortally wounded by a tragic accident (usually involving some sort of horrendous battle between the hero and the villain) after which the hero rushes to his/her aid but is too late. And as the injured one dies, the narrator goes over their regrets, Confessions of love, etc. After his/her death the hero laments and angsts about the fact that it's his/her fault.

2nd example: The Suicide Fic. This Shipping Death Fic can be about one member of the couple doing something to break the other one's heart (such as breaking up with him/her, one of them going off somewhere, like a mission or something, really far away, and leaving the other behind, or heck, just saying something hateful) and the broken hearted one, in so much excruciating heartache kills him/herself over it, and rarely the other member, feeling guilty, follows in his/her suicide. Or it could be about one member of the couple angsting about, I dunno, some sort of past traumatic event or something, (in this case, the hurting has nothing to do with the loved one) and in true emo fashion, killing themselves over said angst. This Suicide Fic is usually from the point of view of the one committing suicide, and sometimes he/she writes a poem about it.Gack! XP

Now, this doesn't make ANY logical frigging sense to me at all. Why would you want to kill off part of the couple? What's the appeal to that, huh? I dunno, I thought it was enough just making a standard Shipping fic... I mean, if part of the couple was to die, wouldn't that cancel out the pairing altogether? That just kinda defeats the purpose.In short, I don't see whats so fanservicey about Shipping Death Fics, but PLEASE, if you're gonna write a Fan-Fic pertaining to a certain pairing, my advice, don't make it a death fic. And even if you do, make sure you're a good writer.
